In Kenya, you’ll rarely hear a recall of baby formula, and when you hear of contaminated formula, it’s always after the distribution has been done weeks before.

Tracking these batches can never be easy, in most of these Eastleigh distributors, there won’t be an ETR or some sort of digital product tracking ID. Given these, contaminated baby formula recalled in other countries will easily land in our shelves.

What can you do?

  • Don’t buy any of their line if you can’t tell the batch ID

Signs Your Little One’s Formula Could Be Unsafe

  • The package has dents, leaks, rust spots, or “puffy” ends.
  • A broken seal suggests the contents have been exposed to moisture or air.
  • The package is past its expiration date; always confirm at the shop.
  • Dark spots, gritty or lumpy powder, these are signs of mold and moisture. Throw it out or return to the shop for replacement.
  • A foul, sour, rancid, or medicinal smell. Any unpleasant odour indicates spoilage.
  • The infant is vomiting, has severe diarrhoea, or abdominal pain, stop giving the milk and go to the hospital.
  • The infant has fever, irritability, jaundice, or grunting breaths.
  • The infant has constipation, weak sucking, droopy eyelids, loss of head control, or “floppy” arms and legs after a few days of eating.
If any of these signs are noted, it's an emergency; go to the hospital!

Here are some recalls that you should know about;

The baby formula recall issue started from a contaminated raw ingredient, arachidonic acid oil, a fatty acid blend sourced from China.

The oil was contaminated with Bacillus cereus, which produces cereulide, a heat-stable toxin that causes severe vomiting and gastrointestinal symptoms.

Nestlé:

Recalled several variants of its SMA line including SMA First Infant Milk, SMA Advanced, SMA Anti-Reflux, SMA Comfort, and SMA Alfamino and Guigoz formula because of milk allergies and cereulide contamination.

Danone:

They recalled multiple batches of Aptamil and Cow & Gate infant formulas because of Cereulide toxin contamination. {Aptamil and Coe & gate are very popular in kenya}

Lactalis:

They recalled various specific batches of Picot brand of infant formula distributed across the EU following cereulide contamination.

Kendamil

Batches of Kendamil whole milk infant formula were recalled due to Cereulide contamination early this year.

The a2 Milk Company:

There was a voluntary recall of over 63,000 units of its a2 Platinum Premium USA Label. Due to cereulide toxin contamination.

ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula

In 2025, byHeart recalled all its products, due to botulism concerns.

In November 2025, the FDA and CDC tracked dozens of cases of infant botulism.

The CDC then declared the outbreak in February 2026 after 48 infants were hospitalized and successfully treated.

Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula

This powder was recalled due to potential contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii.

Perrigo Company

In 2024, they voluntarily recalled 16,000 batches of Infant Formula. Which had high levels of vitamin D that can impair the kidneys, and moisture concerns that could encourage bacterial growth. That is: Premium Infant Formula with Iron 2024 Aug, Gerber Good Start SoothePro in 2023, and in 2019 June, Parent’s Choice Advantage Infant Formula.

Contaminated Baby Formula Risks

Cronobacter sakazakii

This can cause sepsis, that is, bloodstream infections, meningitis, neurological damage, motor impairments, developmental delays, and death.

Clostridium botulinum

Clostridium botulinum spores pose a danger to infants, as they can lead to gradual paralysis, feeding difficulties, and respiratory failure.

Cereulide toxin

Cereulide is a highly heat-resistant toxin produced by the bacteria Bacillus cereus. It causes severe diarrhoea, dehydration, and life-threatening complications in infants.

Heavy Metals

Some baby formula has been found to contain heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and cadmium.

Heavy metal exposure to infants causes stunted brain development, lowered IQ, delayed motor skills, and increased risk of behavioral issues like ADHD.

Salmonella

Salmonella in baby formula can cause a severe infection called salmonellosis. It causes severe dehydration, high fever, meningitis, or sepsis.

Any other I might have skipped? Please let me know in the comments!

One question that has stuck with me while researching this is, why doesn’t Kenya manufacture its own baby formula? Not a single brand is made in Kenya, when we are an agricultural nation that has a lot of dairy farming.
