Most Christians today shun the idea of cleansing, as you’ve seen on social media, where the vast majority think cleansing is some new age fad that should be performed by “secret societies”

But according to the bible, cleansing was a normal practice in the old days, and done for spiritual, social, or ceremonial purity, and not for hygiene alone.

In Leviticus, you get details and instructions on how people cleansed themselves after skin diseases, bodily discharges, and contact with unclean things.

Cleansing involved:

  • washing with water
  • shaving hair
  • offering sacrifices
  • waiting periods of 7 days

When Cleansing Was Done

  • When meeting with god like in Exodus 19:10–14
  • When entering holy places
  • When atoning
  • When prepairing for war
  • After returning from battle

Like In Leviticus 16, the High Priests cleansed themselves before entering the Holy Place by bathing in water, wearing clean linen garments, and offering purification sacrifices.

This was the central cleansing ritual for the entire nation.

The Various Ways Of Cleansing:

🪣Washing the Body With Water

This was the most basic and frequently mentioned cleansing method.

Used when or after touching anything unclean, after sex (Lev 15:18), after menstruation (Lev 15:19–24), after childbirth (Lev 12:1–8), and after illnesses or skin conditions (Lev 14–15).

  • Leviticus 15:8 – “He shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water.”
  • Leviticus 14:8 – “Wash his clothes, shave off all his hair, and bathe in water.”

🪣Washing Clothes in Water

Clothes had to be washed in flowing or standing water, depending on the impurity.

Verses:

  • Leviticus 11:40 — “He shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.”
  • Numbers 19:7 — “The priest shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water.”

🪣Full-Body Immersion in “Living Water”

“Living water” meant and still means flowing water like; rivers, springs, and streams.

This was a strict requirement for deeper purity.

Verses:

  • Leviticus 15:13 — “He shall bathe his body in running water.”

This is the foundation of the mikveh a Jewish ritual bath, which is still done today by the Jews.

🪣Shaving All Body Hair

This was done after major impurities, diseases, or skin conditions.

Verses:

  • Leviticus 14:8–9 ;  after cleansing from a skin disease, the person shaved: head, beard, eyebrows and ALL body hair .

This was part physical hygiene, and part symbolic restart.

🪣Burning Items That Cannot Be Washed

Items like clay pots absorbed impurities and were destroyed by fire.

Verses:

  • Leviticus 11:33 – an unclean vessel must be broken.
  • Leviticus 13:52 – a garment with mildew must be burned.

This shows ancient understanding of contamination.

🪣Scrubbing Houses (Mildew/Mold Treatment)

Leviticus 14 describes a house cleaning coupled with inspection like scraping the walls, removing contaminated stones, washing the interior, replastering the walls, and burn infected materials.

This is shockingly very similar to modern mold remediation..

Verses:

  • Leviticus 14:41–45.
Na wewe unaishi nyumba inakaa ivi surely.

🪣Ash and Water Solution (Ash of the Red Heifer)

Ash was mixed with water and was sprinkled for; corpse contamination, certain diseases, and major impurities .

Verses:

  • Numbers 19:9–13.

The ash acted like an alkaline cleaning agent which is similar to old soap.

🪣Isolation [Quarantine] plus Washing

People with certain conditions were isolated, then washed when symptoms cleared.

Verses:

  • Leviticus 13, quarantine for skin diseases.
  • Leviticus 15 , isolation until discharge stops.

This was early public health practice.

🪣Sprinkling Water With Hyssop

Hyssop plant was used as a ritual brush or sprinkler to apply blood or purifying water during sacred cleansing ceremonies.

Hyssop Plant

In Exodus 12:22, it says “Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe.”

Leviticus 14:6, “He is then to take the live bird and dip it, together with the cedar wood, the scarlet yarn and the hyssop, into the blood of the bird that was killed over the fresh water.”

Ultimately, biblical cleansing wasn’t just about washing away dirt, it was about restoring connection, both spiritual and communal. Cleansing was a way to start fresh and step back into harmony with God and others.

What practices in your own life help you reset, restore, and step back into harmony?
