Millennials are people born between 1981 and 1996.

At least I expect that African millennial leaders will:

  • Dismantle gerontocracy ongoing colonisation by Western states, and patronage-based political systems.
  • Dismantle ongoing colonisation by Western states that pose as keepers of African states minerals.
  • Break down institutional bribery, build transparent systems of public accountability.
  • Break free from resource-extraction dependency, which has no growth.
  • Reclaim control of mineral sites to change our economic destiny
  • Build coalitions based on shared economic goals rather than ethnic lines
  • Let’s leverage Africa’s booming tech hubs, focus on manufacturing, and add value.
  • Engage citizens directly via social media to crowdsource policy feedback and explain complex legislation.

Below is a list of Millennial heads of state as of June 2026.

Ibrahim Traoré: President of Burkina Faso,Age 37

Mahamat Déby: President of Chad, Age 41

Assimi Goïta: Interim President of Mali, Age 41

Bassirou Faye: President of Senegal, Age 46

Nayib Bukele: President of El Salvador, Age 44

Daniel Noboa: President of Ecuador, Age 38

Gabriel Boric: President of Chile, Age 40

Vjosa Osmanu: President of Kosovo, Age 44

Jakov Milatović: President of Montenegro, Age 39. Notably, his prime minister is also a millenial, 38 yr old , Milojko Spajić.

Kim Jong Un: Head of state North Korea, Age 42

Great to see these odds of millennial heads of state. I look forward to seeing more African nations choose younger leaders – those born after 1979.

We’ve had enough of the old guard who do everything except restore our sovereignty. Traore so far is doing us proud!
